The Spirit of John I. Burton Scholarship Funds will support future graduates of Burton High School who choose to attend the University of Virginia’s College at Wise or Mountain Empire Community College to continue their education.

Mountain Empire Community College

University of Virginia’s College at Wise

§         Created in 1972 as one of 23 state community colleges

§         Mission to provide transfer courses, workforce development training, and technical/career studies programs

§         Serves Lee, Scot, Wise, part of Dickenson Counties and the City of Norton

§         Founded in 1954 to bring higher education to southwest Virginia

§         Mission to provide a diverse liberal arts education

§         Ranked 8th among public liberal arts colleges by US News & World Report

§         60% of the area students that attend higher education in Virginia attend MECC

§         UVA-Wise is home to 1,700 students and the alma mater to 7,200 alumni.

§         Last year, over 7,300 students took a course at MECC; that’s 1 in every 13 people in the service region

§         Total admitted freshman in 2004 was 763.

§         MECC has the highest documented financial need in the state with 80% receiving aid and over 90% applying for aid.

§         There are over 1,000 students receiving financial aid and 525 are the recipients of private scholarships.

§         Current tuition is $789 for twelve hours and is expected to increase 4-6% in the fall of 2004.

§         Current in-state tuition is $7,768 per year and in-state room and board is $5,135 per year.

§         This scholarship helps ensure students can attend MECC.

§         This scholarship helps students graduate with the least debt compared to other national liberal arts colleges.
